Businesses and residents in Durban have complained that the A1 Grand Prix is causing disruption due to roadblocks. The Grand Prix is to be held next weekend and businesses are worrying about a loss of revenue because of reduced access, South African newspaper the Mercury has reported.
Ronnie Hiepner, manager of Summer Square Hair and Beauty Boutique, said that her shop is not getting any business from people who do not live locally.
"With so much inconvenience to businesses and residents, one has to wonder what will happen in 2010, when the soccer World Cup is here. Hopefully, the organisers of events as big as this will be more organised by then," he said.
Hassim Hassim, owner of Hashmed Pharmacy in the city, said he will have to close on the race weekend. Moreover, residences are concerned about the noise and dust resulting from the roadblocks.
Cindy Zuma, a resident at Crestmore, is annoyed at the lack of warning from the organisers.
"Nobody has told us about the closures. We have only been hearing about it from the media. We don't have permits to access the area as yet, and don't know where to go should we experience problems accessing our homes," she said.
