Team Mexico in the streets of Mexico City

Team Mexico in the streets of Mexico City

21 March 2007

The residents of Mexico City got a real taste of what to expect this weekend when the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport takes to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for the first time. This was thanks to a city centre demonstration on Monday by local hero, Salvador Duran.

Driving his A1 Team Mexico car, the 21-year-old, who was born in Mexico City, did two laps of the main plaza in the political district of the capital. As Monday was a bank holiday to celebrate the birthday of another local hero, the streets were crowded with racing fans.

After getting out of the car Salvador said: "I'm very glad to get my country to compete. I am very grateful to everybody for all the support they have been showing me since I've got back to Mexico. All the people tell me they are looking forward to the race and have high expectations. I am here along with my team to give a good result to all these people around us."

Surprisingly this will be the first time Salvador has raced on this track. However, he does know it quite well as every year his personal sponsor Telmex shoots its commercials there. His comments before racing there for the first time were: "I have never done a proper test or race here. When I shoot commercials for Telmex we are just on one part of the track. However, it is my home track and I have memorised the lay out and every day I dream of this race. I have the feeling we are going to do well despite my lack of experience here."
