Team Britain getting ready for China

A1 Team Great Britain heads to China next week for the penultimate round of the 2006-07 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport at the Shanghai International Circuit, 13th-15th April, with Cumbria's Oliver Turvey (pictured above) joining the driving ranks as the team's latest rookie recruit.

Turvey, winner of the 2006 McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award, will get his first taste of A1GP competition when he participates in the Friday morning 'Rookie-Only' session at the stunning 2.85-mile home of the 'Chinese Grand Prix'. The 19-year-old, while new to the Shanghai track, has already had a brief taste of the 550bhp A1GP car he'll utilize next Friday having enjoyed a run-out in the British entry at the Brands Hatch Media Day last month.

On that occasion Oliver partnered with the team's regular racer, Burbage's Robbie Kerr, to run some demonstration laps in the car as a foretaste of what can be expected at the Kent track when the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport heads to Brands Hatch and the Grand Prix Circuit at the end of the month for the 2006-07 season finale, 27th-29th April.

Joining A1 Team Great Britain in China following its maiden victory in Round 9 in Mexico City, Turvey, a five-time winner in last season's Formula BMW UK Championship, is suitably excited about the opportunity to showcase his talents in A1GP next weekend.

"It's going to be a great experience for me to go out to Shanghai," he stated. "I'm looking forward to driving the British A1GP car again, especially now that it's a winning entry! As I discovered at Brands Hatch, the car's great to drive. It's extremely powerful, certainly more power than I've been used to in my career so far, but it was fairly easy to adapt to and I can't wait to get back behind the wheel."

On fulfilling his Friday duties before handing over to Kerr for the remainder of the Chinese race weekend, Turvey commented, "The rookie session is certainly a great opportunity for a young driver like me to show what I can do in the car. It's obviously an important part of the weekend in helping the team prepare for qualifying and the races on Sunday but I'm hoping I'll get the chance to do some fast laps and give the team a chance to evaluate me further. Needless to say I'd love the opportunity to race for Great Britain and Oliver Jarvis has proved that if you do a good job in the rookie sessions the team takes note and gives you a chance to compete."
