Dyk's ankle should be 'ok' for Shanghai
10 April 2007Ian Dyk's ankle is almost back to full fitness after his unlucky trip on the way to the podium in Mexcio. The excitement of a third place finish in the Sprint race saw Ian trip over a concrete barrier after exiting the A1 Team Australia car, badly sprain his right ankle.

The ankle swelled up within minutes and despite heavy strapping and treatment from A1GP medical delegate, Dr Paul Trafford, it remained badly swollen and bruised for the Feature race. Ian still managed a top ten finish despite the injury.
On his return to Australia, Dyk had the ankle x-rayed in order to discover the full extent of the injury. With the ankle turning a nasty black and blue and enlarging to three times its normal size, Ian was relieved the damage wasn't too bad. 'There are no fractures or breaks on the bones and the ligaments are not torn. It was just heavy bruising and swelling,' he said.
The doctor did insist on some extensive physio treatment though, using both ultra-sound and infrared machines to encourage circulation and make Ian's body work faster to improve the healing process. Two weeks later the swelling is almost gone and Ian's ankle is only lightly strapped.
With the Shanghai round of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport underway this weekend Ian has been working hard to make sure the ankle was back on form. 'It certainly took a lot longer to heal than I thought,' he said. 'I didn't think I'd be here two weeks later still slightly sore but it's fine now. I've looked after it well and this weekend won't be a problem as far as my ankle is concerned. It should be strong and ready to go, definitely 90 per cent. I'm not running on it yet but I'm able to pivot it in cycling and swimming. I've got full movement through the ankle again and all the movement I require in the car I have back now.'
A1 Team Australia has a strong record at the Shanghai circuit having placed third in last year's round with Ryan Briscoe. The team has good set-up data to fall back on and with Ian's ankle back to normal are confident of another solid finish. The team arrives at the world's most modern racing circuit late on Tuesday and will be hard at work first thing Wednesday morning in what will be another exciting contest in the World Cup of Motorsport.
