Germany spoils home party

Germany's Nico Hulkenberg spoiled Team Great Britain's hopes of a perfect weekend at its home Grand Prix by winning the feature race at Brands Hatch. Hulkenberg managed to resist intense pressure from the relentless Robbie Kerr to prevent a double home win after Kerr won the sprint race this morning.

Kerr finished just 0.619s behind the German whilst Italy's Enrico Toccacelo completed the podium after the Italian just finished ahead of India's Narain Karthikeyan. The Netherlands, USA and France made up the top seven. Moreover, to add to the home crowd's disappointment Matt Halliday ended up eighth, clinching second place in the world championship for New Zealand with Team Great Britain third overall.

The young German just got ahead of Robbie Kerr at the start after the poleman got away slowly. The 27-year-old refused to give away the lead without a fight however as the two cars battled wheel to wheel around the sweeps of Brands on the first lap with Hulkenberg just edging ahead. The safety car then came out after Ian Dyk's high speed crash at the first corner. The Australian collided with Czech Republic's Jan Charouz after an overly-ambitious move up the inside. Charouz then collected Zaugg after the impact, ending the South African's race.

Hulkenberg managed to stay ahead after the restart before pitting on lap nine. Kerr then came in a lap later, rejoining just behind the German before the safety car's second appearance following Bruno Junqueira's spin. After racing recommenced it looked like Kerr had found a way past Hulkenberg on lap 16 when he went around the outside on the exit of Hawthorns but, carrying too much speed around Westfield, he failed to make it stick as Hulkenberg held the inside line.

For the rest of the race Kerr fought hard to find a way past the German with the world champion ending up victorious at the last race of the 2006/2007 A1GP world cup of motorsport season. The results confirm that Team France (67 points) finishes fourth in the championship ahead of Team the Netherlands (57 points). Malaysia, Italy and Switzerland make up the top eight.
