Parente predicts Portugese wins

13 June 2007

Alvaro Parente believes A1 Team Portugal can be race winners in the third season of A1GP, after showing improvement towards the end of this season. Portugal returned to the World Cup of Motorsport for the last four meetings of 2006/07, and immediately impressed, finishing fifth in the South African Feature race.

However, Parente believes that with a full term next season, the performance shown in those final season proves that the team can be a real threat next season. 'If Portugal comes into the season with the new team and everything right we could do a very good job,' Parente said. 'The comeback in Durban was very positive. I was contacted just before the race and I wasn't waiting for it or expecting it at all.

'At the end we came out with some points. Coming out with fifth place with those conditions was really great. The other teams were up to speed and we were just jumping straight in. If we can get the right team and the right deals then next season should be quite good. We could get some very good results, including victories.'

The 22-year-old competed in the majority of the first season's races for Portugal, scoring three podium finishes. He was even in contention for victory in the Feature race of the A1GP Eastern Creek, Australia, however, a jump-start penalty meant he finished down the order.

'It was good to come back for the championship,' Parente said. 'I like it very much. It was a competitive season, competitive car to drive and had some very good drivers. A driver has to get used to getting into the car and getting up to speed quickly and that was a problem for me. I had just had an operation, and I hadn't been in training.'

Although Parente has not yet been confirmed as a driver for the team next season, he should be in good form if he is called-up. He recently took victory around the streets of Monaco in the World Series by Renault single-seater race there. 'It will keep me race fit for A1GP again,' he added. 'I'm second right now in the championship after three race weekends and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season. I'm working hard to get some very good results in.
