New qualifying and points system

New qualifying and points system

30 August 2007

A1GP has revised its sporting regulations this season, with a new points structure and a revised qualifying format. Equal points will be awarded for both the Sprint and Feature race - now 15 for the winner - with a bonus point available for the fastest lap in each race.

The qualifying format will also be changed. There will still be the same four, 15-minute sessions with one flying lap allowed in each. However, now a driver's best lap time in the first two segments will determine his Sprint race grid position, with the best times from the final two segments determining the Feature race grid. This does away with any aggragate times.

This could potentially make the Sprint race even more exciting, because drivers will not be afraid to risk manoeuvres for fear of losing a good grid slot for the Feature race.

In the first two seasons of A1GP, the Feature race grid was decided by the finishing order of the first race.
