Hermanto ready for A1GP debut race

26 September 2007

A1 Team Indonesia, one of the 22 nations competing in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, heads to Zandvoort, Holland this weekend for the opening round of the third season of racing in the A1GP series. Rookie driver Satrio Hermanto (22) will be making his debut for the Indonesian team in his role as lead race driver.

The 2.6 mile Zandvoort circuit in Holland set in the sand dunes of the North Sea coastline was host to the first round of the championship last year. A sell-out crowd of 75,000 fans attended the event to watch the 22 nations go head to head in a thrilling battle for the first win of the season. The atmosphere created by the faithful Dutch fans was unrivalled, ensuring that the Zandvoort round is now a firm favourite for all the teams.

Driver Satrio Hermanto is looking forward to making his debut for Indonesia; "I can't wait to get out and race this weekend, we've had some solid runs during the pre-season test sessions and I've gained confidence with the car and the team. Driving for your nation is such an honour, and this Sunday I will get to line up against some of the top motor racing nations from around the world. The weekend will be tough for me because there will be less track time than a usual race weekend, as we are only running on the Saturday and Sunday, which means there will be a lot of work compacted into just two days. I'm really looking forward to it; I just hope I can deliver a good result for Indonesia."

Hermanto, who also competes in the Formula V6 Asia championship, has never driven such a powerful car before and this weekend marks his first race outing for the team. Hermanto has already completed three test sessions in the run up to the third season, to acquaint himself with the A1GP machine. The test sessions took place at Snetterton and Silverstone race tracks in the UK, as the team prepared for the upcoming season of racing.

To over-see Hermanto's progress during the races this season, A1 Team Indonesia have called upon the services of experienced British driver Danny Watts (27), to give driver coaching and guidance to the rookie. Watts has an impressive background in both single seaters and sports cars and will be on hand to offer tuition during Satrio's first season of A1GP racing.
