Jiminez to open the season for Team Brazil

A1 Team Brazil has confirmed that GP2 driver Sergio Jiminez will compete in the first four A1GP meetings of the 2007/08 season. Jiminez, an A1GP rookie, has already had strong results in GP2 this summer and has tested with Brazil during the off-season at Silverstone.

The 23-year-old will also compete in the respective rookie sessions for the team until his eligibility expires, when other young Brazilian drivers will be given the chance to shine.

The team has also confirmed that American open wheel star Bruno Junqueira will return for the team in selected races later in the season. 'We have great drivers in Bruno and Sergio,' said team principal Emerson Fittipaldi. 'The fantastic thing about A1GP is that both of them can be a part of the team. We are extremely proud to have an established driver like Bruno committed to helping, and we are also proud to be able to allow younger Brazilian talents to shine.

'We have made the decision to run Sergio in the opening rounds of the championship because he is able to dedicate 100% of his time to the cause, and he has impressed me in pre-season testing. It also means a lot to me to be able to hand a chance to someone that has perhaps been underestimated, or hasn't been able to show his true potential to an international audience because of a lack of funding.'

Brazilian fans will also get the chance to watch A1GP on terrestrial television, with all races showing on Free-to-air TV station RedeTV!. The races will be shown 'as-live' at a fixed time of 11am local time to ensure continuity for viewers.
