26 September 2007The new season of A1GP racing kicks off this weekend in the seaside town of Zandvoort in the Netherlands. The Zandvoort event was the first of the season in the 2006/07 Series and it was new to A1GP at that time. For this visit the team has experience and race data to draw on, and as Yoong explains, "Last season we didn't know what to expect. It was a new event and a race track that I hadn't driven before. This time we know what is ahead of us, so we can prepare better for it. I enjoyed the track with its tight, twisty turns and undulations around the sand dunes, so I am looking forward to racing there again. The fans are very knowledgeable and really enjoy their motor racing, I'm sure the crowds will be as big as last season - it was just a sea of orange shirts supporting the Dutch team!"
There are a few amendments for the upcoming calendar, with a new venue in Zhuhai, China and a couple of changes to the regulations. Yoong says of these, "There are more points on offer for the Sprint race which can only be positive, but the biggest difference will be in the Feature race. There will be an additional pitstop, and that adds to the unpredictability of the racing. As a team-based Series I think it's appropriate for the teamwork element to be an important part of the event, and I know the Malaysia crew will be ready for the extra challenge that this presents."
The team finished sixth in the championship last season, having scored three wins and 13 top ten finishes, and Yoong knows that consistency is the key. He comments, "We need to make sure we're scoring points in every race and getting on the podium as much as we can. I think we can improve on a top six position in the overall standings and that it is a very realistic goal."
