A1 Team Switzerland showed it will challenge for both pole positions in this afternoon's qualifying session, after setting the fastest time in this morning's second practice.
As rain clouds continued to dominate the skies over the circuit, times only marginally improved over this morning's other wet session. Jani's session-topping time of 1m 45.090s is still 15 seconds off last year's lap record, set in dry conditions.
It was also impressive for Jani, who revealed he had never actually raced the track in any formula prior to this weekend.
Loic Duval's A1 Team France car was only just behind, 0.355s adrift, setting another consistently quick lap to add to his fastest time in the first morning session.
A1 Team Germany was third quickest with Christian Vietoris behind the wheel, and Salvador Duran proved his pace in the earlier session was no fluke with the fourth fastest time. Adrian Zaugg, returning for the first time to the venue of his and South Africa's maiden A1GP win, was fifth, ahead of home favourite Jeroen Bleekemolen in the Netherlands car.
Like the first session, it was just as incident-packed, with many drivers coming to terms with the treacherous track conditions.
The session was even red-flagged twice. The first was for when Erik Janis' Czech Republic car spun going into the Hogenholtz corner, and the second was for a spectacular-looking accident which happened to Canada's James Hinchcliffe.
Hinchcliffe hit a wet patch on the inside of Turn Four and understeered off the course over the grass about ten minutes into the session. As he crossed the grass he hit an access road, which launched him briefly into the air. When he landed, he spun backwards into the barrier, causing officials to stop the session.
