Zaugg confused with starting procedure

27 October 2007

A1 Team South Africa's Adrian Zaugg has vowed to go for broke at the start of races in the future after holding back and losing places in Brno.

Zaugg was on pole for both Sprint races so far this season, which begin with rolling starts. At Zandvoort, he grabbed the lead at the start using a strategy of putting the throttle down slightly early and catching his rivals unawares while heading across the start line.

However, this led to the field being very spread out when it took the start. Although that start was green-flagged and deemed acceptable by the official starter, drivers were advised by officials at Brno to take it more cautiously and ensure they were lined up slowly in the standard two-by-two formation.

The field was very much more together in Brno, but poleman Zaugg made a poor start. Although he led at the line, he was passed by three cars on the run down to the first corner and he eventually finished fourth.

While remaining in the rules, Zaugg says he will no longer take such a cautious approach to rolling starts, because he believes it could hurt him. 'I don't really know what happened there at the start,' Zaugg said. 'They all jumped it. In the drivers' briefing we were told to start when the lights turn off. I thought I was a little bit early on the power but they all must have been even earlier on the power than me.

'So next time I won't listen to what they say - I'll do my own thing. It's not really very fair and all the other guys took advantage. I won't really depend on them next time. I'll go all out blazing from now on.'
