Summerton back for USA

Summerton back for USA

21 November 2007

A1 Team USA has recalled Jonathan Summerton to the team for A1GP Sepang, Malaysia this weekend. A1 Team USA was torn in the off-season picking between Summerton and former Indy 500 champion Buddy Rice for main racing duties, after the pair proved evenly matched in testing.

Rice drove the opening two meetings of the season, with a best result of 13th in the Feature race in Zandvoort, and the team has now decided to put Summerton back in the car for this weekend.

'Jonathan has quality experience in the 'We the People' car,' A1 Team USA seat holder Rick Weidinger explained. 'As a team we haven't been able to find the speed we need to run at the front and that's where we want to be. Our goals for the season haven't changed. We want to win races and finish in the top five in the championship. We need to start scoring points and Jonathan has proven he can.'

Summerton, who holds the record of being A1GP's youngest-ever podium finisher thanks to his second place in Mexico City last season, says he has been keeping fit and is confident of a strong result in this weekend's races.

'I can't wait to get back in the 'We the People' car,' Summerton said. 'I have been training for the past month to be ready for my race seat. I know I will be a bit rusty in the first practice session but hopefully by qualifying I will be able to be in the top ten and then for the races be in the top five. I am looking forward to racing on another F1 track.'

Charlie Kimball, who drove the rookie sessions in Brno, will again drive the Friday morning sessions in Malaysia.
