Portugal launches new rookie scheme

A1 Team Portugal has joined forces with its national motorsport governing body in a pilot scheme to encourage its youngest and brightest talents into A1GP.

The Portuguese Federation of Automobile and Karting and A1 Team Portugal are to join forces in a new project to be known as FPAK A1GP Portugal Junior Team.

The scheme will mean that the winners of Championship, Portuguese Cup and Open Racing Series in Portugal will take part in the rookie sessions in A1GP races. All drivers will still have to have the relevant experience to fufill's A1GP's International B Licence regulations and be within age restrictions.

With A1 Team Portugal's driver Joao Urbano going to compete in the last of his rookie sessions in Sepang, Malaysia this weekend before he becomes ineligible due to having driven in more than six race, the scheme will be in place to give the rookie role to its first driver in Zhuhai in China next month. The name of the first winning driver will be announced at a later date.
