A1 Team Germany racer Michael Ammermuller has defended his driving after being penalised for three controversial incidents in Malaysia last weekend. The 21-year-old was making his debut in A1GP for the reigning champion, but was involved in three similar collisions with three different drivers at the same corner - the tight third turn.
However, Ammemuller reckons that all the collisions could have been avoided if the driver ahead had been looking in their mirrors correctly.
"For the incident in the Sprint with Wickens, it was fair because I went into turn one and he saw me coming," Ammermuller said. "He knew I was quicker. Out of the second turn I was next to him and he could watch me in the mirrors. When we touched I was already quite far in front and he should have seen me. Maybe if he had let me half a metre more space then he could have stayed on the outside with me on the inside. It was a normal race incident."
"The incident with Jarvis was a difficult situation because he was trying to overtake the car in front of him. He was concentrating more on the car in front of him and he didn't watch me. Then he closed on me. Maybe it was a bit optimistic but I thought maybe he had seen me in the mirrors."
"The collision with the Czech Republic wasn't really my fault because he saw me on the pit exit and I was all the time beside him on the outside. He was a little bit in front of me and he was on the outside but he just closed me. If they had left more space then they are still in a better line for the next corner and they can try and overtake me back. I try to overtake people. I didn't want to be behind them the whole time I want to fight for the positions. The target is always the race win. In overtaking I take risks. It worked in the first race but didn't work too well in the last race."
