A1GP Taupo, New Zealand organisers have confirmed changes to one of the circuit's corners in a bid to make this season's event even better by encouraging more overtaking. Although A1GP's inaugural meeting in Taupo last September was widely touted as a huge success, some drivers found it a challenge to overtake around the 3.5km-layout.
In an effort to create more opportunities, one of the last corners on the circuit will be tightened up to create an extra opportunity for passing.
Last season, Turn 12 was a smooth, flowing, fourth gear corner taken at roughly 190km/h. However, work has just begun on laying the asphalt to turn this into a sharp 90 degree left-hander, which will be taken much slower by the A1GP cars.
Because this corner is at the end of the longest straight on the circuit, this will mean cars have to brake more to successfully make the corner. With A1GP's unique PowerBoost system, cars should be able to pull up alongside each other - the one who is the bravest on the brakes will be the most successful.
"Cars will now be subjected to heavier braking, which opens up more opportunities to pass," said A1 Team New Zealand racer Jonny Reid, who has backed the changes. "If drivers are prepared to push hard, and they're good enough, they should be rewarded. I can't tell you how determined I am to do well at home and I'd love to have those stands packed and roaring each time we hit that corner."
