China can make top six, says Cheng

14 December 2007

Congfu Cheng believes A1 Team China can target a top six championship ranking this season - after reaching its highest place in A1GP history. Cheng has helped China score 16 points so far this season, moving it to tenth place on the current leader board, but still reckons that a realistic goal is to break into the top six nations.

China's best end-of-season finishing position so far is 15th in 2006/07, and it currently lies 20 points out of Great Britain in sixth place.

'To be honest, we are in tenth place in the rankings, but the target is going to be top six,' Cheng said. 'We have to try and set this target. It is not going to be easy to be able to be competitive. But at the moment we have proven we are reasonably quick this season.'

However, the team will be starting its home race this weekend slightly on the back foot, with the team being without the services of rookie driver Marchy Lee. Lee has been unexpectedly called home on family business this weekend. 'At the moment I don't feel any extra pressure,' Cheng added. 'I don't see it any different to any other races and certainly we go for good results this weekend.

'It will be difficult without a rookie driver but I feel good because the team has fully backed me. I have raced in Zhuhai before and one of our mechanics is used to setting up cars here. We all know the way we work so hopefully we will be ok and we won't be too much at a disadvantage. I'm very much looking forward to it - it's my home race so I'm expecting a lot from myself.'
