Ammermuller: 'We are back'

Michael Ammermuller has declared that 'Germany is back' following the defending champion's first victory of the season in Zhuhai. Ammermuller's dominant Sprint race win occurred in only his third A1GP race, becoming only the fifth driver to have competed in a rookie session to go on to win a race the same weekend.

Germany struggled to score significant points in the early rounds and a podium finish was taken away from him by race stewards in Malaysia after being involved in a controversial collision with Canada's Robert Wickens.

Ammermuller is now hoping that the win will be the turning point in Germany's title defence this season. It currently lies in eighth place in the standings with 37 points. 'Yes, we are back,' Ammermuller said. 'But last time in Malaysia we were also back - it's just we didn't get the points. 'A few more weekends like this and we can start to fight our way back to the top.

'The win wasn't as easy as it looked. Neel Jani was behind me with really good pace but in the end I did a good job and I had a good car this weekend - we were competitive the whole time.'

Ammermuller then finished fourth in the Feature race, having had a late race battle with South Africa's Adrian Zaugg. 'I didn't try to be too crazy because the officials are not my friends at the moment,' he admitted. 'It was better to be careful and get the points.

'But I wasn't so happy at the beginning - France pushed me out at the first corner and China made a crazy move on me. On the back straight he [Congfu] was on the inside and I had to go to the gravel. I don't know what he was thinking about - at this speed you cannot do things like this.'
