Summerton rues traffic problems

19 January 2008

A1 Team USA's Jonathan Summerton believes a top three starting position was possible today, despite still scoring the squad's best grid slot for 13 races.

Summerton qualified the 'We the people' car sixth for tomorrow's Sprint race and tenth for the Feature race. But after showing strongly in practice, the 19-year-old believes that traffic ultimately cost him starting spots.

'It was a crazy session,' Summerton said. 'Everyone waited until the last minute to go out - I tried making a gap from Ireland as they were on their hot lap and of course a few guys then came through. Then they went off and brought dirt back on track which cost us quite a lot of time.

'I really think we could have been top three. But the car was great and I really enjoyed it today.'

Summerton is targeting a podium finish tomorrow, which could kick start the team's season.

'With the car we had today there is plenty we can do from here,' he added. 'I have to stay clean of course at the first corner especially in the Feature race and work away and overtake people one by one.

'It is definitely possible to get a podium place for the Feature, and although the Sprint is a short race I reckon we can move up quite a few places.'
