Wickens: 'Hinch deserves a chance'

Wickens: 'Hinch deserves a chance'

28 January 2008

Robert Wickens believes team rival James Hinchcliffe should get another chance to race for A1 Team Canada, despite his own strong results in the last three meetings.

Wickens has scored the two podium finishes in the red-and-white maple-leafed car in 2007/08, while Hinchcliffe's two outings at the start of the season only yielded a best result of 11th, in Brno's Feature race.

However, Wickens says lifelong friend Hinchcliffe should be given another go in the car, because the team has improved so well since Hinchcliffe raced that it doesn't do justice to his ability.

Team officials have yet to confirm who will race at Eastern Creek, but are set to make an announcement early next week. 'It will be a tough decision to be perfectly honest,' Wickens said. 'James has a good shot at it. The team has developed so much more than when James was driving, so really [the results earlier in the season] didn't do James justice for how good a driver he is.

'So I think we should try and give him another chance. James is a great driver, we'll see. Whatever happens, I'll definitely be in Australia for the rookie session at least.'

The podium finish moved Canada up to 12th in the standings, and he believes that moving into the top ten is possible following next weekend's races.

'In Taupo we had consistent pace the entire time, which is more than we can say for many other races this season,' he added. 'We've made steps in the right direction. We're starting to build as a team and we're getting stronger and stronger throughout the year.'
