Duval in race to get to track

22 February 2008

A1 Team France's Loic Duval faces a race against time in order to compete in tomorrow morning's official free practice session at Durban. A1GP.com has learnt that Duval's plane is scheduled to arrive just after 9am local time at Durban airport tomorrow, less than two hours ahead of the start of the final free practice session before qualifying. The 25-year-old is currently in Japan fulfilling a commitment he had agreed to before the season began.

He will then have to be driven the 16km from the airport to the street circuit where he must then have a special drivers' briefing before being allowed to go out on circuit.

Duval will only be allowed to take part in the afternoon's qualifying if he has competed in one free practice session.

The reason the team has employed such an ambitious strategy is in an attempt to keep its title challenge going - Duval won his maiden race for the team last time out in Australia. The team is currently tied on points with New Zealand at the top of the A1GP championship table.

Team-mates Jonathan Cochet and Nicolas Prost drove in the two practice sessions today, and if for some reason Duval does not make it to the circuit in time, Cochet will stand in and drive for the rest of the weekend.

Duval is being kept in touch with his team's performance today, and was following information the team was sending him on his mobile phone while waiting for his plane to take off in Japan.
