Ireland takes maiden win in Mexican feature

16 March 2008

Ireland took its maiden victory in the A1 Grand Prix series on Sunday in Mexico as Adam Carroll brough his car home three seconds ahead of Britain's Oliver Jarvis. USA's Jonathan Summerton was third.

The race failed to get off first time as the start was aborted after Brazil was way out of its position and then there was a problem with the lights causing a second aborted start. The race was started fifteen minutes late by a green flag and Canada led Switzerland, Britain, New Zealand, Ireland and Germany on the first lap.

The battle up front was fierce and on lap seven Switzerland passed Canada to take the lead. After the first round of pit stops on lap 17, Switzerland was leading Ireland, Britain, Canada, Germany and the USA.

The race took an unexpected turn on lap 27 when Jonny Reid crashed New Zealand's car at the chicane causing the safety car to be deployed. The race resumed in the same order and on lap 37 came the second round of pit stops. Ireland's mechanics were the quickest, getting their driver out ahead of Switzerland.

Jani pressured Carroll for the lead but on lap 41 was fiven a drive-through penalty for not pulling in behind Ireland on the second pit stop. From there on Ireland was able to cruise to the flag, giving Team Ireland an extra reason to celebrate tomorrow on St Patrick's day.
