Negrao earns Brazil promotion

Negrao earns Brazil promotion

09 April 2008

Alexandre 'Xandi' Negrao is to step up to race driving duties for A1 Team Brazil for this weekend's races in Shanghai, China.

Negrao has twice undertaken rookie duties for Brazil, most recently in Durban in February. He impressed the team, finishing sixth in the session, and now the experienced GP2 racer will get his chance to step up and race.

Felipe Guimaraes, who joined the squad as rookie driver at the last round in Mexico, will continue his role for the Shanghai weekend.

Seat holder Emerson Fittipaldi said: 'Xandi has been part of the A1 Team Brazil family for a long time and I'm very pleased that we can give him the opportunity now to show what he can do in the races.

'Felipe did a solid job for us in Mexico so we are happy for him to be continuing as our rookie. For the China round we have to look at getting some strong race results as we need good points from the weekend. There are only two rounds left and we are capable of finishing the season on a high.

Negrao was elated at finally being given the chance to shine. 'I am so happy to be given this opportunity by Brazil and I can't wait to get out to Shanghai to give this my all,' Negrao said. 'The car looked very good in South Africa, we were very competitive so I hope that we can have the same pace. I would like to finish in a strong points position and reach the expectations of the team.'
