A1 Team India led the way as official practice got underway at Chengdu circuit in China. Held in dry and sunny conditions Narain Karthikeyan got to grips with the technical and bumpy circuit, producing a lap of 1.16.710, just beating France's Nicolas Prost.

Karthikeyan was given special dispensation to run in the session because A1 Team India had not tested its new car prior to Chengdu, and he had the edge by just 0.012 seconds. Prost was the fastest rookie in the session in an impressive start to the weekend. The 27-year-old is racing for France for the first time in Chengdu, in place of regular pilot Loic Duval.

Switzerland's rookie, Alexandre Imperatori was third quickest, with a car that looked to be handling well over Chengdu's bumps. His session wasn't without its moments however, with one particularly well-saved slide coming into a tight hairpin. Ireland's Niall Quinn had a fraught session, spinning three times in the first half hour. He was one of several to have off-track moments, which included Italy Newcomer Christian Montinari, and Malaysia's Aaron Lim.
