Gallagher warns Liuzzi: A1GP will be tough!

09 April 2009

A1 Team Ireland boss Mark Gallagher has warned Italy's new driver, Vitantonio Luizzi, that he should not be expecting an easy ride to the front in A1GP. Luizzi, who has competed in 39 Formula One Grands Prix, is to race for A1 Team Italy both in Portugal this weekend and at Brands Hatch in three weeks' time.

The team has recruited the current Force India tester in a bid to push themselves up from 14th in the standings but Gallagher, heading the title-chasing Irish squad, believes that it will not be plain sailing for Luizzi, despite his Formula One reputation and domination of the Formula 3000 championship in 2004.

"It's great news that Tonio Liuzzi is joining our series here in the Algarve, but I am certain that, like many current or former F1 drivers before him, he'll find A1GP a tough challenge and no easy task to become a winner," Gallagher said.

"With identical cars and a lot of talent in the field, I think it's been a bit of a culture shock for other drivers trying to make the swap; we have had a lot of top drivers before, like Jos Verstappen, Robert Doornbos and Narain Karthikeyan and, just like Tonio, current or former Red Bull development drivers such as Scott Speed and Sebastien Buemi.

"There's no place to hide in A1GP - you can't blame the car, the engine or the latest aero package because they're all the same. It's all down to the guy behind the wheel, his engineer and mechanics."
